Art & Design A-Level at Kenton School

Course description

Art and Design introduces students to a wide range of art materials, techniques and processes. The course promotes the idea of independent thought and students are expected to pursue and explore investigations into areas of their own interests in response to a given theme. Students are encouraged to work in many more practices than they were at GCSE including but not limited to, advanced painting techniques, plaster works, animation, and photography and installation pieces. In Year 12 students undertake 2 units. Unit 1 is a response to a given theme and unit 2 is a personal response to a selection of questions set by the examination body. In year 13, students will complete units 3 and 4, Unit 3 is comprised of a self-directed body of work and includes a written journal which must be between 1000 and 3000 words long. Unit 4 is comprised of a personal response to a selection of given themes set by AQA. The course emphasis is on learning by doing and allows learners to develop their creativity and independent thought. Due to the personal aspect of the course students are expected to be self-motivated and carry out work outside of lessons.
