English Literature : A Level at Regent College

Course description

This course is taught at Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth 1 College as part of our course partnership.


Course content

The first year involves the study of a Shakespeare play, an anthology of poetry and two prose texts. The theme is ‘Love through the Ages’ and students will be required to undertake wider reading on the same theme. The Second year involves reading on another theme which will be either WW1 and its Aftermath or Modern Times: Literature from 1945 to the Present Day. Students will also produce a 2,500 word extended essay on two different works of literature at least one of which must have been written pre-1900.

Future opportunities

Students who have successfully completed English Literature A-level go on to study many different disciplines at university. Students who read for English degrees similarly enter a wide number of professions, such as teaching, marketing, the media and banking. There is an increasing need in commerce, industry and the professions for people who are accomplished communicators, and the best preparation for this is the study of English.
