Course description

The programme is modular, consisting of 9 mandatory units of the VRQ Level 2 The mandatory units include:- Unit 201 - Working in beauty related industriesUnit 202 - Follow health and safety in the salonUnit 203 - Client care and communication in beauty related industriesUnit 205 - Promote products and service to clients in a salonUnit 216 - Salon reception dutiesUnit 204 - Provide facial skincareUnit 206 - Remove hair using waxing techniquesUnit 207 - Provide manicure treatmentsUnit 208 - Provide pedicure treatmentsUnit 210 - Provide eyelash and brow treatmentsUnit 209 - Apply make-upUnit 212 - Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sectorStudents yet to attain grade C in English and maths will work towards qualifications in these subjects, which are essential in preparing them for progression onto higher level study and /or employment. Work experience: the College will assist students with any work placements.Visits: the section offers the opportunity to visit exhibitions and competitions throughout the programme.Requirements: Wear professional uniform as recommended by the college; maintain a high standard of personal hygiene; be able to work effectively with others and be willing to carry out and receive all treatments; may be required to treat male clients. Excellent attendance is required (100% expected, minimum 90% acceptable); No jewellery, including facial piercings (in line with Awarding Body requirements) Short natural nails with no nail polish; Hair must be well groomed and worn up if long.

Entry requirements

This course is for students over the age of 16 who wish to work towards a career in Beauty Therapy.You will need 5 GCSEs at grade D including maths and English, a school reference and successful interview.


Assessment is continuous by observation of practical skills, oral questioning, on-line tests. On successful completion you will achieve the Beauty Therapy City & Guilds VRQ Level 2

* Beauty treatment rooms open to the public offer realistic working environments;* A vocational learning centre offers access to IT resources;* Students will need a specialist equipment kit, professional salon uniform from the College's designated supplier, a pair of black shoes and black cardigan.* Additional costs may be required to cover trips organised by the section. Students may be eligible to apply to the College Learner Support Fund for financial assistance towards these costs.

Future opportunities

Successful students may progress onto L3 Beauty Therapy or L3 Spa Therapies or L3 Complementary Therapies.
