Performing Arts Level 3 Diploma at Isle of Wight College

Course description

The BTEC Extended Diploma is for creative and energetic students who require a good qualification in dance and drama. Students will need to be passionate about the area and be willing to try new ideas, explore and experiment.

Course content

Students learn to work together. You will gain a greater understanding of the performing arts sector and the background to the performance work you see.  Students will increase their skills (dance, drama, acting and singing) and learn to make creative and innovate theatre.

Entry requirements

Age at entry: 16+

It is important that you have a strong interest in the subject area and, ideally, that you have studied drama or dance before. Entry to this course requires a good general education and is dependent on a successful audition (see below) and interview.

You will normally need to have one of the following:

  • 5 GCSE grades A*-C
  • Level 2 qualification in Performing Arts @ Merit grade
  • Related work experience
  • An educational background which demonstrates the potential to succeed at Level 3


Performing Arts teaching staff have extensive professional experience within the area. Students will take dance classes in our dance studio. You will have drama workshops, see performances, be encouraged to visit theatres. There may also be opportunities to meet practioners (actors/ dancers/choreographers/ directors). Practical and theoretical work is integrated throughout the course and the theoretical work will help challenge and expand your idea of what theatre can be.

Future opportunities

A BTEC Extended Diploma is equivalent to three A levels. Students gaining an Extended Diploma in Performing Arts will have access to a range of career and Higher Education opportunities. Progression from this course could be to Higher Education (University) courses in Performing Arts/Dance/Drama/ Theatre, training colleges in the performing arts or careers in the sector (creative, production or administration). The skills learned on the course are essential for any employment and are especially relevant for work which involves managing people, a high profile and/or effective communication.
