Performing Arts (Acting) BTEC Extended Diploma Level 3 at The Manchester College

Course description

For anyone looking to develop their creative, artistic and professional acting skills further, this BTEC Extended Diploma at Level 3 is an ideal course to deepen your knowledge and push your practical performance abilities to the best they can be. You’ll learn all about a variety of performance skills and styles, focusing on those that are current and relevant to the industry. This could cover everything from Contemporary Performance and Acting for TV & Film, to the techniques taught by influential practitioners like Strasberg and Brecht. You will also take a closer look at playwrights or a key time in history that had an impact upon the development of performing arts. All the movement, vocal, and theoretical skills you learn are geared towards preparing you for drama school, a higher level degree or a professional audition!

Entry requirements

We’d like you to have at least 5 GCSEs at grade A* - C in order to enrol on this course, including one in either English or Maths. You should also be able to learn lines and ideally have some practical experience. We’ll invite all applicants down to visit us for a practical audition and an informal interview. You’ll take part in a combination of practical performances and workshop assignments for this course, alongside some written coursework tasks, which could include historical research or theory and a log of your acting progress.

Future opportunities

With this level 3 qualification, you’ll have a number of relevant skills to start a career in the performing arts industry, or continue onto to another course at The Manchester College and develop your knowledge and abilities even further. You could enrol on an HNC course in Acting, or advance onto a BA (Hons) degree in Acting for Live and Recorded Media at The Arden School of Theatre. Alternatively, you could explore a whole range of careers related to acting and performing arts Link to Careers, and may soon find yourself working in TV or film, writing scripts or teaching drama to other students!

    • Shena Simon Campus is a vibrant sixth form centre in the heart of Manchester. The campus offers a full range of A levels and is well known for its excellent performing arts and music courses. It has industry standard media facilities and two theatres.

      Performances at the Waterside Theatre and Sackville Theatre are open to the public and are advertised on our events page.

      Local area

      Shena Simon Campus is a Grade II listed building in a lively and beautiful part of the city centre. Whitworth Gardens, also known as Sackville Park, is a leafy urban oasis next to the campus. Shena Simon is surrounded by university buildings, giving 16-18 year olds a window into student life. The streets around the campus have lots of interesting architecture in the ornate style of the textile industry.

      Manchester’s central bus station and Piccadilly and Oxford Road train stations are a few minutes’ walk from the campus. The National Express coach station is just around the corner.

      Shena Simon has the benefit of all the city centre’s attractions. It is particularly close to Chinatown and the Cornerhouse gallery and arts cinema.
