Hairdressing City and Guilds Advanced Technical Diploma Level 3 at Suffolk New College

Course description

This study programme gives you the opportunity to train as a stylist in our modern commercial salons at ‘The Zone’. You will improve your current skills and developing advanced hairdressing services in a dynamic and innovative way, by working on paying customers.

Course content

This study programme will enable you to develop skills in  hairdressing alongside English, math’s and work experience in local hairdressing salons. You will additionally have weekly sessions to improve your employability skills and personal development while at college.

This study programme will extend your hairdressing skills including establishing a client base and allow you to develop  specialised techniques. You will develop and enhance your hairdressing by learning how to carry out hairdressing consultaions, cut ahir using a combination of techniques, creatively colour and lighten hair, creatively style and dress hair and colour correction services.  Optional units are available in cutting men’s hair using basic techniques, creative hair extension services, smoothing and straightening systems, hair relaxing services and creating a variety of perming effects, specialist hair and scalp treatments and creative hair design skills. 

Your lessons will be taught in a number of different ways including: demonstrations, theoretical delivery and completing a range of assessments on clients and models. You will build your confidence and skills in a constantly growing hair industry. 

Entry requirements

A full time level 2 Hairdressing qualification graded at merit and an academic profile of 4 GCSEs at grade D or 3, including English Language or equivalent.


To gain this qualification, students will successfully achieve one externally set synoptic examination and one externally set synoptic practical examination, and optional unit assessment.

Financial information

Approximately £175 for uniform/kit and £40 for trips/materials

Future opportunities

You can progress into a range of hairdressing roles within the industry such as a stylist. Further opportunities could occur as a private educator and assessor, training academy employee, manager or salon owner.
