Desigh & Technology: Product Design AS/A2 Level at Christleton High School

Course description

This course will suit students who have a strong interest in designing, modelling, making and evaluating products, with investigations into market trends and the processes involved in the manufacture of a product. The course builds on the skills already developed at GCSE Design and Technology and would therefore be suitable for students who have achieved at least a grade C or above in Design and Technology.

Aims of the course:

  • To develop innovation and creativity through product design and to make high quality products.
  • To develop an understanding of the processes involved in the designing and manufacture of a product

Course content

The course is divided into two distinct levels:

AS - For those who wish to commit themselves to only one year and are not yet sure about areas in which they wish to specialise. AS is both the stepping stone to a full ‘A’ level and a distinct qualification in its own right.

A2 -The second year builds upon knowledge and experience gained in the first (AS) year.

The course structure consists of AS level where pupils produce a design portfolio and a high quality product based on a chosen design brief.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 GCSE passes at grades A* to C including at least grade C in a related Design & Technology course.

In addition, students sit an exam based on the theory knowledge they have gained. At A2 level students produce a design portfolio and product in conjunction with a client and sit a second exam based on their two years’ knowledge of Product Design. In AS and A2 both the coursework and exam are equally weighted.

Future opportunities

Product Design, Engineering, Architecture, Furniture Design, Art and Design.
