Health and Social Care A Level at Kingswood Secondary Academy

Course description

If you are interested in working in a health and social care
environment, then this course will help prepare you for
university and employment.

Course content

Unit 1: Human Growth and Development: Externally assessed.
– This unit will give you an understanding of the life stages
from infancy to old age and the physical, intellectual,
emotional and social characteristics of each one.

Unit 2: Communication and Values: Internally assessed
assignments.
– This unit will give you an understanding of the importance
of communication in caring activities and about the values
involved in care.

Unit 3: Positive Care Environments: Internally
assessed assignments.
– This unit will allow you to understand the diverse society
we live in, and that the promotion of a care value base can
enhance service users’ opportunities in accessing services.
You will learn about organisations and society having a
responsibility to protect and safeguard the rights of those
who are vulnerable – through policy and legislation.
 
A2 Units – Year 13
Unit 7: Meeting Individual Needs – Externally assessed unit.
– An examination unit: assessing your knowledge and
understanding of how HSC services are structured, and
provided in the UK. This is a synoptic unit and draws on
knowledge gained from Units 1, 2 and 3.
 
Unit 8: Promoting Health and Wellbeing: Internally assessed.
– In this unit you will find out why health promotion
campaigns are carried out and how target groups are
identified. You will carry out a small scale health promotion.

Unit 9: Investigating Disease: Internally assessed.
– You will learn about the disease process, and will carry out
an individual investigation into various aspects of two
specific diseases. This will include the biological basis of
diseases, the ways in which a diagnosis can be made,
availability of treatment, factors preventing the spread
of disease.

 

Entry requirements

5+ A*-C grades at GCSE including C grade or above in English and
mathematics and merit or above in BTEC health and social care.

Assessment

– 3 modules at AS (1 is an exam unit).
– 3 modules at A2 (1 is an exam unit).

Future opportunities

The GCE health and social care course can lead to further
education, training or employment in the health and social
care industries.
