English Combined A level at Kenilworth School and Sports College

Course description

The course will develop your interest and enjoyment of both language and literature. You will read and study a prose, poetry and drama lirerary set text and a variety of shorter texts, both fiction and non-fiction, in a themed anthology. English Language and Literature A level will enable you to develop your knowledge of both elements of the academic study of English. It will develop your critical reading skills and your ability to analyse a text in detail as well as developing your knowledge of the English language. It will be useful for anyone interested in a business career, publishing or journalism.

Entry requirements

To study this course you will need to have achieved a grade C or better in both GCSE English and English Literature.


Paper 1 Telling Stories (closed book) 3 hours (worth 40% of the A Level) You will answer questions on prose and poetry; in part based on an anthology about Paris .

Paper 2 Exploring Conflict (open book) 2 hours 30 mins (worth 40%) One question is based on drama set texts, the other is a piece of re-creative writing and a commentary on that writing.

Coursework Making Connections 2,500 – 3,000 An investigation that explores a specific theme or technique in both literary and nonliterary texts.
