Art A-Level at Smestow School
AS Students will be introduced to a variety of experiences exploring a range of media, processes and techniques and will be required to produce a Portfolio of work (unit 1) which exemplifies their studies carried out during the AS course. Unit 2 is an externally set assignment and students are given eight weeks to produce preparatory work. At the end of the lead-in period, candidates must complete a 5 hour unaided/supervised final piece/outcome. A2 Students will follow the same endorsement as AS level with similar requirements and are expected to develop work based on an idea, issue, concept or theme, supported by a written element. Self directed learning will be expected in the second year. Unit 4 is an externally set assignment and students Candidates have eight weeks to produce preparatory work for a 15 hour unaided/supervised final piece.
AS Component 1 Portfolio. 60% of the AS mark Component 2 Externally-Set Assignment 5 hour unaided/supervised. 40% of the AS mark Alevel Component 3 Personal investigation/study. Component 4 Externally-Set assignment 15 hour unaided/supervised.
A Portfolio of work, Merit or C grade or higher at BTEC/GCSE is an essential course requirement.
Students are marked on the following Assessment Objectives. AO1 Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding. AO2 Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops. AO3 Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress. AO4 Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements. Throughout each unit students are closely monitored and frequently assessed to maintain progress. All units are assessed by the centre and moderated by AQA.
