Performing Arts BTEC First Award (Level 2) at Havering Sixth Form College

Course description

The BTEC First Award is a practical, work related performing arts course equivalent to one GCSE for students who enjoy acting, dancing and singing. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations and activities. It introduces you to the performing arts related industries and provides a good basis to go on to more advanced performing arts, music or drama qualifications.

Course content

The course is made up of three units, two core units and one specialist unit. The specialist unit enables you to study a particular area in more depth. The two core units and the specialist unit are:

  • Individual showcase, this is externally assessed and is worth 25% of the total course. Under controlled conditions you will have to write an audition application and perform a solo audition piece.
  • Preparation, performance and production, you’ll need to rehearse and perform a production to a live audience and maintain an assignment folder.
  • Acting skills, you’ll rehearse and perform to a live audience, take part in acting workshops, develop your acting skills, and maintain an assignment folder.


Entry requirements

Students will need to perform an audition for this course.


Exam Board – Edexcel

1/3 externally assessed assignment, 2/4 internally assessed coursework.

Financial information

Optional Cost

£40 - Theatre visits, which students will need to pay for, will form an important part of the course.

Future opportunities

Students may progress to a Level 3 course in Performing Arts, Music or Dance.
