Carpentry and Joinery Level 1 at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai

Course description

Would you like to start a career as a carpenter/joiner?

This programme introduces you to the fundamental skills of site carpentry, including the use of hand tools, power tools and access equipment. It also includes core units which introduce you to construction work.

The programme is suitable for a variety of people looking to work in wood occupations. This includes students progressing from school and professionals from other sectors looking for a change of career. You will gain the practical knowledge you need to proceed onto Level 2 or into the industry.

Course content

This programme is delivered through a blend of the following:

  • Group work
  • Classroom-based learning
  • Tutorial support
  • Educational visits
  • MOODLE (virtual learning environment)
  • Practical sessions in a realistic working environment (RWE)

Entry requirements

  • 'Pathway to Construction' course
  • Sound knowledge of basic mathematics
  • Good standard of written and oral communication
  • GCSEs in Maths and English at grade C are desirable
  • An interview is required and you will be asked to declare any unspent criminal convictions

All places are subject to satisfactory interview.

This programme is assessed through a blend of the following:

  • Practical and written assessments/assignments
  • Presentations and demonstrations
  • Portfolios of work
  • Performance and observation
  • Demonstration of practical skills
  • Online examination

Future opportunities

Most students will progress onto Carpentry and Joinery Level 2. This will allow you to develop your skills further and take another step towards your new career.

If you progress directly into employment, you will have the basic training to work as a trainee.
