History AS/A2 Level at The Bishops' Blue Coat CofE High School
The study of history provides students with the ability to analyse complex concepts and problems, to make judgements on cause and consequence and to learn the skills of accurate and effective communication. The skills developed in this course have a wide variety of applications. A-level selection involves making choices which will allow further study at university.
Students unsure of a career direction are advised to choose at least 2 ‘facilitating subjects’ (subjects which will equip students with the appropriate skills and knowledge for their university studies). History is recognised as one of these ‘facilitating subjects’.
The course will follow a study of early modern history, looking at Britain in Unit 1 and the wider world in Units 2-4.
Those students choosing History should have good skills of communication. There is frequent opportunity for lively, challenging debate. Pupils should have achieved grade B or above in History and grade C or above in English and Mathematics.
The overall weight for each unit is:
Unit 1 Written paper - 25% of the total marks
Unit 2 Written paper - 15% of the total marks
Unit 3 Written paper - 40% of the total marks
Unit 4 Coursework unit - 20% of the total marks
Many students have gone on to study history at university (Durham, Edinburgh, Liverpool) and post graduate level (as far as Edmonton, Alberta!). The most popular professions pursued by former history students of this school are: law, accountancy, business management, the police, retail training schemes, the armed forces, journalism and broadcasting
