Land-based Horticulture Introductory Diploma at Derby College

Course description

This course gives you the chance to gain skills in establishing and maintaining plants, plant propagation, safe use of tools and equipment, and constructing and maintaining horticultural structures.  It is a fascinating introduction to a career in horticulture.

Course content

In addition to horticulture units, you will undertake Functional Skills in Literacy, Numeracy and IT.  You will also complete an additional qualification in Employability and Personal Development.

Entry requirements

You should have a strong interest in working with plants, should have basic literacy and numeracy skills, and should be able to organise the written information required to compile your portfolio.

You must have a minimum of a Merit grade to progress to an Intermediate Diploma.

Assessment

Assessment will be via a series of practical tasks and questions.  You will be required to compile a portfolio of evidence of your achievements throughout the course.

As well as learning about plants, you will develop your literacy and numeracy skills.

Future opportunities

If you do well in your studies, it may be possible to progress to a Level 2 Intermediate Diploma in Horticulture or related subject.  However, you must have a minimum of a Merit grade to progress to an Intermediate Diploma.

 Alternatively you could go directly into employment.
