BIOLOGY - AS/A2 Level (OCR) at The Crypt School

Course description

Both AS & A2 Biology are one year courses and are offered as part of a full time study programme

Course content

AS Level:

F211 : Cells, Exchange and Transport. Cells – Exchange and Transport

F212 : Molecules, Biodiversity, Food and Health. Biological Molecules – Food and Health – Biodiversity and Evolution F213 : Practical Skills in Biology 1. Controlled internal assessment of practical skills.

A2 Level:

F214 : Communications, Homeostasis and Energy. Communications and Homeostasis – Excretion – Photosynthesis – Respiration

F215 : Control, Genomes and Environment. Cellular Control – Biotechnology – Ecosystems and Sustainability – Responding to the Environment F216 : Practical Skills in Biology 2. Controlled internal assessment of practical skills.

Entry requirements

As well as the standard Crypt entry requirements, a minimum of BB double award science or a grade B at Biology GCSE, plus a B in Chemistry are preferable, particularly for the pupils wishing to take both AS and A2.

Assessment

AS Course F211, F212 will be examined at the end of the first year.

You will do examined practicals throughout the year.

A2 Course F214 and F215 will be examined at the end of the year.

You will also do examined practicals throughout the year.

Biologists are found in a wide variety of scientific careers: Medical, forensic, pharmaceutical. Agriculture and food science. Biotechnology and genetics research. Environmental protection and conservation.

Who should apply for the course:

If you are well motivated are interested in Biology and enjoy a challenge then this is the course for you. You must be able to work independently at home to review and learn the material that has been covered in class. It is a significant step up from GCSE Biology.
