Agriculture Level 2 Apprenticeship at Sparsholt College

Course description

Agriculture covers a wide range of areas including food production in cereals, rootcrops or livestock, or perhaps non-food and industrial crops for energy or pharmaceuticals. Farms vary enormously, so a broad introduction to agriculture will provide a platform from which you can develop specialist skills.

The ideal apprentice will enjoy working outdoors and have an interest in technology, machinery, animals and managing the environment in a sensitive and sustainable way.

Course content

An apprenticeship in agriculture will provide the essential skills to work on the land in many different areas. Depending on the farm, the programme could cover how to prepare and cultivate sites for planting crops; operate a tractor with attachments; harvest and store crops; maintain equipment and machines; how to look after herds and flocks, load and unload animals for transport, and assist during the breeding season.

An apprenticeship will also help develop a professional working style, safe working practices, awareness of the work environment and communicating effectively with colleagues and customers.

Other skills will include functional skills needed in the work place (Maths, English, ICT) and the specialist NPTC Certificate of Competence qualifications required to carry out certain tasks. These might include safe use of pesticides, all terrain vehicle handling, rough terrain forklift, safe use of sheep dips, manual handling, abrasive wheels and safe use of brushcutters/strimmers.
