Art and Design Foundation Diploma at Abingdon and Witney College

Course description

This is an intensive, fast moving one year programme of practical study introducing you to the broad field of Art and Design.

Course content

The primary purpose of the course is to enable you to identify your strengths and aptitudes so that you can select and gain acceptance on to a specialist degree course suited to your needs and career plans. You will explore a whole range of approaches to art and design with specialist tutors in the large purpose built Arts building. The course starts broadly and becomes more specialised as the year progresses. In the first term you will explore 9 specialist areas including printmaking, 2D Fine art, 3D design, sculpture, fashion, textiles, spatial design and photography. In the second term you will begin to consolidate your growing sense of direction through the selection of three specialist options. In the third term, you will devote your time entirely to an in-depth six week project which will become of a public exhibition. The course also includes a series of lectures which seek to challenge and inform you about contemporary and historical issues and help you locate your locate your own practical work within a broad cultural context. The Foundation year provides a crucial link between A Level and specialist degree courses. At the same time it is a year of exciting challenges and new pathways which we believe you will find both refreshing and rewarding. The Art and Design department have been invited to join the prestigious UAL (University of the Arts London) examining board. This means that all of our Art and Design qualifications will be awarded certified by UAL. Advantages to this include a guaranteed interview in to any of the London UAL University Colleges after completion and the opportunity to exhibit Final Major Project work at Chelsea College of Art at the end of the academic year after successful completion of the Foundation Diploma.

Entry requirements

You will need to have a minimum of 2 A-Levels (or equivalent) at grade C or above (with one of these being an Art & Design related subject) or Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art, Design or Media at MMM. You will also be required to provide a written personal statement, a positive reference and to attend a formal interview with a portfolio of work.

Financial information

Learners aged 24+ who wish to enrol for Level 3 (or higher) courses are not entitled to any fee concessions. You must pay the 24+ learnerĂ¢€™s fee for the course or take out a student loan via the Student Loan Company (or a combination of the two). Please contact the Student Services team for further information on student loans. The 24+ learner's fee covers the cost for the full duration of the course. All other fees are payable each year. The fees shown below are those charged in 2015/16 and may be subject to increase for 2016/17. Don't forget that we have bursaries and loans available to help you with fees - call 01235 216298 for more information. For some courses clothing, equipment and registration fees may apply and will be payable to external companies. Only trips necessary to the successful completion of your course (compulsory trips) will be listed below, other trips and visits may be offered as part of your programme of study, these will be optional and fees will be collected throughout the duration of the course.

Future opportunities

In recent years our students have achieved very high standards, with the award of distinctions to over a third of the students. Our record in placing students onto excellent degree courses is very strong. This course is a preparation for entry to BA and Foundation Degrees in Art, Design and Media. Most degree courses require students to have completed a Foundation Course.
