Applied Science BTEC Level 2 Diploma at Brooklands College

Course description

The course develops skills, knowledge and understanding of ‘How Science Works’ through practical activities such as: planning to test a scientific idea, collection and analysis of scientific data and working safely with others.  You will study current science issues through investigations using numerical data and using ICT to produce reports.

The course is suitable for those learners who have an interest in science and want to study a portfolio based qualification.  Alongside this course, students can study GCSE Maths and/or English retakes.

Course content

The course consists of:
8 mandatory units:
•  Chemistry and our earth
•  Principles of Science (externally assessed)
•  Energy and our universe
•  Biology and our environment
•  Applications of Chemical Substances
•  Applications of physical science
•  Health applications of Life Science
•  Scientific skills (externally assessed)

4 optional units including:
•  Understanding human behaviour
•  Exploring our universe
•  Investigating a crime scene
•  Practical scientific project

Entry requirements

You need 5 GCSEs at grades D and above including at least one C grade in an appropriate subject.

Assessment

The course includes two externally assessed mandatory units alongside internally assessed portfolio based assignments.

Financial information

There will be a charge for specialist scientific materials and educational visits.  Details will be available at enrolment.

Students are allocated a certain amount of free printing, after which a small fee will be incurred.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of this course, learners can progress onto Level 3 Diploma in Applied Science; Level 3 Extended Diploma in Forensic Science, or some Advanced Subsidiary subjects. 

The course can lead to routes into science technician or assistant practitioner working in a wide variety of roles in the science industry.
