Product Design (3D) AS/A2 Level at Belfairs Academy

Course description

The specification has been designed to encourage candidates to take a broad view of design and technology, to develop their capacity to design and make products and to appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing.

Course content

Unit 1 – PROD1 Materials, Components and Application

Unit 2 – PROD2 Learning Through Designing and Making

Written (or electronic) design portfolio with a manufactured outcome

Unit 3 – PROD3 Design and Manufacture

Candidates answer three questions: one question from three in each section, plus a final question from either section

Unit 4 – PROD4 Design and Making Practice

Written (or electronic) design portfolio with a manufacturedoutcome.

Candidates submit evidence of a simple, substantial designing and making activity.

Entry requirements

GCSE Product Design grade C. Other applicants considered if spaces available based on interest in Product Design demonstrated at interview.

Assessment

Assessment is through coursework and examination

 Unit 1 exam is 50% of AS, 25% of A Level, 2 hour written paper – 80 marks

Unit 3 exam is 25% of A Level - 2 hour written paper – 84 marks

 

Coursework will be continually assessed as it progresses

Unit 2 coursework is 50% of AS, 25% of A Level

Coursework – approx. 50 hours – 80 marks

Unit 4 coursework is 25% of A Level

Coursework – approx. 60 hours – 85 marks

Future opportunities

3D design could take you into a number of exciting career paths.

Of course there’s product or automotive design but what about  computer generated cartoons? Or maybe CAD for industry appeals to you more? This course could take you into architecture, teaching, manufacturing, advertising or engineering.
