French A Level at Northgate High School
The course focuses on developing student’s linguistic skills (including the acquisition of vocabulary, structures and grammar), alongside their understanding of the culture and society of countries where French is spoken. Topics include social issues and trends, and French-speaking artistic culture. The A Level course also covers political engagement in the French-speaking world. Assessment tasks will be varied and will cover listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.
The purpose-built Northgate Language Centre provides excellent language learning facilities with access to a full range of resources including the Internet, language-specific software and audio-visual equipment. Lessons are conducted for the most part in French. Study is supported and enriched through links with our partner school, the Lycée Saint Louis in Saint Etienne, near Lyon. Students are encouraged to live and study here for a week in the spring term of Year 12.
Subject specific entry requirements: GCSE grade B in French
Degree in French or International/European Studies. With other A/AS subjects for entry to other degree courses, careers in the business world, civil service, diplomatic Service, education, tourism, interpreting and translating.
