Engineering - BTEC Level 2 First Diploma at Yorkshire Coast College
The BTEC Level 2 Diploma has been designed for those candidates who wish to become an Engineer and continue their studies at a higher level.
This programme would suit anyone who is new to the industry, looking for a career change or is wishing to learn new skills.
This course will cover the following units:
- The Engineering World
- Investigating an Engineered Product
- Introduction to Communications for Engineering
- Health and Safety in Engineering
- Engineering Materials
- Electronic Devices and Communication Applications
- Using CAD Drawing Techniques in Engineering
- Selecting Engineering Materials
- Fabrication Techniques
- Engineering Marking Out
Students wishing to pursue a career in this area need to achieve good standards of Literacy, Numeracy and ICT.
For this reason, if you are under 19 years of age when you begin your course, you will be required to study these essential subjects.
Minimum of 4 GCSEs grade D or above including Maths and English language or relevant subject qualification and a minimum of level 1 course in chosen subject at merit or above and/or English language and Maths at level 1.
After successful completion of the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Engineering you may wish to progress into the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Engineering or enter the world of work and continue your studies as an Apprentice.
As well as the area’s very successful existing Engineering and Manufacturing industries, new technologies such as an offshore wind farm are to be built off our coast at a cost of £300 billion which will need, for instance, operations and maintenance engineers
to keep it running smoothly.

The current local average annual wage on entry – depending on qualification – is currently between £18,000 - £22,000.
