Photography BTEC Diploma Level 3 at St Helens College

Course description

With this course, you will develop your creativity and interests as you experiment with various aspects of photography.

You will learn about darkroom practice, work in the studio and take part in location shoots. In addition to this, you will also have the opportunity to study portraiture.

Course content

During this course, you will cover the following units:

  • Darkroom practice
  • Studio techniques
  • Colour printing
  • Location photography
  • Portraiture
  • Photoshop work
  • Experimental photography
  • Large and medium format photography

Projects are exciting and innovative, including elements of research and academic writing. These creative projects will enable you to develop a personal style as well as enhance your specialist skills.

The course will also include an end of year exhibition.

Entry requirements

You should have four GCSEs at grade C or above, including English language or literature.

English and maths forms an important part of your future, ensuring you achieve the best success in your chosen career. But don't worry, if you haven't got the desired grades, we will still have a course available for you.


All projects are coursework based as there are no formal exams for this course. An external verifier will check the quality and standards of work produced.

Financial information

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2016), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation.

Future opportunities

Once you've completed this course, you'll be ready to look for your first role in the industry or maybe launch your own career as a freelance photographer.

Alternatively, you may decide to study our BA (Hons) photography degree at University Centre St Helens, accredited by University of Chester.
