Art and Design Level 2 BTEC Diploma at Basingstoke College of Technology

Course description

You will receive instruction, guidance and encouragement to practise and develop the skills necessary to achieve the award. The course covers a wide range of subjects including:

  • Fine Art Textiles and Fashion
  • 3D and Graphics
  • Painting
  • Printmaking
  • Photography
  • Computer Aided Design
  • Ceramics
  • Sculpture and 3 Dimensional Design (spatial and product).


You are expected to study independently for a minimum of 10 hours per week in addition to college timetabled study.

Students may also choose to study for a GCSE to increase their qualifications, or to resit a previous GCSE subject to improve a grade. To enhance employment opportunities the course may also have additional qualifications built into the programme.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade D and above including English and preferably Maths, or successful completion of a Level 1 course (Merit) such as Creative Media. You must also have a good portfolio and demonstrate enthusiasm at interview.


The course is continuously assessed through assignments, projects and case studies. Students will develop a responsible and cooperative approach to working independently and in groups. The course uses practical activities, presentations and involvement with employers wherever possible.

Financial information

If you are aged 16-18, tuition and registration fees are free. 
If you are aged 19 or over, tuition and registration fees are payable at the start of each year of study; please ask for details.
If you are aged 24 or over, you may be eligible for a Student Loan to assist with your fees; please ask for details.

Future opportunities

This course is a recognised route onto a Level 3 course, students should aim for a merit or distinction grade to ensure progression.

Further information

Each course offers appropriate work experience to complement the knowledge and skills you will learn at college. Trips and visits during the year will cost approx £65, with an optional day drawing trip costing approximately £15.
