Mathematics A level at St Robert of Newminster Roman Catholic School

Course description

Study Maths if: You enjoy GCSE Mathematics and you find problem solving
challenging. You want to apply Mathematics to real life problems. You want to
develop your abilities to reason logically. You want a subject that supports your
other choices. Mathematics is important in all fields of industry and commerce so
further study allows you to prepare for a range of careers.

Mathematics is also an extremely important element in many degree courses and without it, further study of most sciences and engineering becomes very difficult, if not impossible.

Course content

Developing and understanding of Mathematics and Mathematical processes.  Develop abilities to reason logically and recognise incorrect reasoning, to generalise and to construct Mathematical proofs.  Extend your range of Mathematical skills and techniques and use them in more difficult unstructured problems.  Develop an awareness of the relevance of Mathematics to other fields of study.

Entry requirements

GCSE Mathematics at Grade 6 or above.


Year 12:

  • 2 written examinations
  • Pure Mathematics and Mechanics
  • Pure Mathematics and Statistics

Year 12:

3 written examinations

  • Pure Mathematics
  • Pure Mathematics and Mechanics
  • Pure Mathematics and Statistics

Learning mathematical skills involves learning to solve increasingly complicated problems.  The course allows you to develop problem solving skills, logical reasoning, numerical abilities, mathematical confidence and communication skills that will help you in a rapidly changing world.
