Course description

The BTEC National Extended Certificate in Travel and Tourism introduces you to the world of Travel and Tourism. This course has been developed to meet the needs of students interested in a career within the Travel and Tourism Industry. It will allow you to develop the skills and knowledge required to progress into employment and/or continue your study in the vocational area. The Level 3 National Extended Certificate a nationally recognised qualification with various additional programmes added to meet the needs of the industry e.g. Work Skills and Introduction to Cabin Crew Service.

Course content

The course consists of 10 units. Units: Investigating the Travel & Tourism Sector The Business of Travel & Tourism The UK as a Destination Customer Service in Travel & Tourism European Destinations Retail Travel Operations Working as a Holiday Representative UK Visitor Attractions Hospitality Operations in Travel and Tourism Passenger Transport for Travel and Tourism.

Entry requirements

The course requires successful applicants to have 5 GCSEs grades A*- C; these must include English and Maths or a BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Travel & Tourism at a Merit grade.

Assessment

How will I be assessed?

A wide variety of assessments will be used. The BTEC programme will use continuous assessment rather than examinations and you will be able to track your performance as you work towards the pass, merit and distinction grades. You will be encouraged to manage your own assessments and identify where you have met the required standards. Methods of assessment may include web blogs, presentations, practical demonstrations, posters, reports, leaflets, interviews and discussions. To facilitate assessment, you will be expected to devote personal time for your studies.

How will I be taught?

The programme is taught through theoretical, practical training and simulation. Each lesson will provide you with assessment opportunities as you work to achieve your goals and targets. You will need an active passion for travel and tourism and your tutors will encourage you to discuss your own achievements as well as the issues in modern travel. Much of your assessment will be online in the form of web logs (blogs) and discussion of key points.

Future opportunities

Level 3 Diploma; Higher Education course in Travel & Tourism. If you want to progress into employment the following areas would be suitable; tour operator, retail travel agent, ground staff at an airport, cabin crew or resort representative.

Additional Courses* During the course, there will be opportunities to achieve other qualifications in addition to your main BTEC programme. These additional qualifications may include: work skills, resort representatives, first aid, customer services and cabin crew.
