English Literature at The Bramcote College

Course description

The course explores different time periods and genres of texts and encourages you to think about the human situation and the challenges it presents us with. You will begin by studying the Aspects of Narrative Unit where you look at exciting and dynamic texts from diverse titles such as the modern children’s classic The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time to the more canonical Pride and Prejudice.

The coursework element focuses on Tragedy within Drama and enables you to explore both modern and traditional texts, allowing you to produce a portfolio of assignments where you have chosen your own titles and areas of interest. The A2 course focuses on Elements of the Gothic and we look at enduring classics such as Wuthering Heights and Dracula. The Further and Independent Reading Unit allows you even more choice and flexibility and gives you the opportunity to research and explore areas of personal interest and preference.

You will also have the opportunity to take part in regular trips to the cinema, theatres and places of literary significance. In the Sixth Form we teach English Literature in small groups and you are promised individual attention and regular oral and written feedback about your progress. The Department has a history of excellent results and we offer thorough and sympathetic teaching and support both in and out of lessons.
