Design & Technology (Product Design- 3D design) - AS at The Crest Academies

Course description

Product design enables students to design and make products with creativity and originality, using a range of materials and techniques. Students will be enthused and challenged by the range of practical activities possible as the course seeks to build upon the multimedia approach.  Design and Technology is a practical subject area which requires the application of knowledge and understanding when developing ideas, planning, producing products and evaluating them. Knowledge and skills are gained in product styling, brand awareness, user-led innovation, materials/processes, the development/communication of ideas, ergonomics, sustainable design, techniques of planning, and the production of models and inclusive design/prototypes and finished artifacts.

Entry requirements

Minimun of 5 Grade A*-C in GCSE including Maths & English.

 

 

Assessment

Product Design is a two year course examined in 2 ways: Coursework (controlled assessment) 60% and written Examination 40% in each year. Candidates will undertake a single design and make activity in both years, which is selected from a range of board-set of tasks. Candidates should submit a 3-dimensional outcome and a concise design folder and/or appropriate ICT evidence. The design folder should consist of approximately 20 pages of A3 paper or equivalent A4 paper or the ICT equivalent. It is expected that candidates should spend approximately 45 hours on this activity.

Future opportunities

Industry is keen to recruit people with capabilities in design thinking, product design and development, and who understand how successful products are made. These skills are developed throughout the 2 year product design course. Possible careers include consumer product design, marketing, industrial design consultancy, design research, technical sales, furniture design, CAD/CAM, buying, interior/exhibition design, advertising and display design.
