Chemistry at Ryde Academy

Course description

This two year course is designed to help encourage lateral thinking and intellectual curiosity within Chemistry, identifying the real world applications of science. It is a well respected subject for many universities and employers since the skills gained through the course allow you to: Improve ideas and understanding, become more adept at practical work and expand upon your communication skills. During the course you will study six units. There are three in the first year and three in the next year. Each year consists of two examined units and a coursework unit. Each unit investigates an area of Chemistry and where it can be put to use in the real world. Practical work in each section reinforces the work.

Course content

Unit 1: (F321) Atoms, Bonds and Groups. Atoms and reactions. Electrons, Bonding and Structure.  The Periodic Table.  1 hour exam. AS – 30%, A2 - 15%

Unit 2: (F322) Chains, Energy and Resources. Basic concepts and Hydrocarbons.  Alcohols, Halogenoalkanes and Analysis. Energy. Resources. 1 hour 45 mins written exam. AS – 50%, A2 - 25%

Unit 3: (F323) Practical Skills Chemistry 1. Internal assessment .AS – 20%, A2 – 10%

Unit 4: (F324) Rings, Polymers and Analysis. Rings, Acids and Amines.  Polymers and Synthesis. Analysis. 1 hour written exam. A2 – 15%

Unit 5: (F325) Equilibria, Energetics and Elements. Rates, Equilibrium and pH. Energy, Transition Elements. 1 hour 45 mins written exam A2 – 25%.

Unit 6: (F326) practical Skills in chemistry 2. A2 internal assessment 10%.


Entry requirements

Grade BB or above in science and B in maths


 80% exam 20% Coursework

Future opportunities

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses such as Biology or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Chemistry, which could lead onto higher education in science related subjects or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to Chemistry or one of the other sciences such as a Doctor, Nurse, Scientist or Pharmacist. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you to develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
