Chemistry at The Fallibroome Academy
The specification is designed to build on the knowledge, understanding and skills developed during the GCSE courses in either the Additional Science award or the separate sciences.
The course is taught in 6 Units:
Unit 1 - Foundation Chemistry 33.3% of AS
Unit 2 - Chemistry in Action 46.7% of AS
Unit 3 - Externally Marked Practical Assignment 1. (EMPA) 20% of AS
Unit 4 - Kinetics, Equilibria and Organic Chemistry 20% of A Level
Unit 5 - Energetics, Redox and Inorganic Chemistry 20% of A Level
Unit 6 - Externally Marked Practical Assignment 2. (EMPA) 10% of A Level
Unit 1, Foundation Chemistry includes Atomic Structure, Amount of Substance, Bonding, Periodicity and an introduction to Organic Chemistry.
Unit 2, Chemistry in Action includes Energetics, Kinetics, Equilibria, Redox Reactions, Group VII the Halogens, Group II the Alkaline Earth Metals, the extraction of Metals and Organic Chemistry.
Units 1, 2, 4 and 5 will be assessed by means of an end of unit examination, marked externally. The EMPA will consist of a practical task set and marked by the exam board.
Technological applications and social, economic and environmental implications pervade the course. Practical work is taught as an integral part of each unit.

Career/Higher Education Application
A Level Chemistry can lead into a variety of scientific careers including Chemical Sciences, Agriculture
Grade B or above in GCSE Chemistry or Additional and Core Science and Grade B or above in GCSE Mathematics.
IT IS DESIRABLE BUT NOT ESSENTIAL FOR STUDENTS TO ALSO STUDY AS LEVEL MATHEMATICS ALONGSIDE THIS SUBJECT.
