Product Design: Textiles A Level at Princes Risborough School
Students will have the opportunity to study fashion in depth, both historical and contemporary. A wide range of materials will be used and enormous scope is given to design innovation and developments. It is the ideal subject for those with artistic flair, a love of fashion and endless creativity!
Successful students in the subject could use this qualification to study Fashion Design or Art at a higher level; then go on to work in the fashion industry or manage retail outlets at a local level.
AREAS OF STUDY:
Coursework element - At AS level students complete a portfolio of two design projects that allow students to exhibit a range of skills both in the designing and making process. Both projects students are required to make their final design as a prototype product.
At A2 level students are given a broad starting point that leads to the designing and making of a bespoke textile garment.
Written paper - The topics of study at both AS and A2 level include: Materials and Components, Design and Market Influences and Processes and Manufacture.
Standard 6th Form entry requirements apply Normal Sixth Form entry requirements (5 or more A*-C grade passes at GCSE including English Language and Mathematics), plus GCSE C grade or above in DT Textiles, Product Design or Food.
Students who have a GCSE in Product Design or Food should be aware that their written folder skills are transferable but the theory and practical skills are specific to Textiles and they should be prepared for a ‘steep learning curve’.
