Drama & Theatre Studies A Level at Cardinal Newman College

Course description

Drama and Theatre is an exciting and challenging subject, which will introduce you to a wide range of plays, acting techniques and practitioners who have shaped the theatre practice of today.

You will develop key skills in performance, in the creative and rehearsal process and over a range of theatrical texts, and learn how to evaluate live performance material; as well as develop your ability to critically analyse all aspects of Drama and Theatre, both orally and in writing.

You will also develop skills in leadership, creativity, communication and collaboration – all of which will contribute to your personal development, and your attractiveness to future employers!

Course content

You will study a very wide range of theatrical texts which will introduce you to different styles, genres and historical periods. You will learn about writing, directing, designing and performing and apply your knowledge both practically and theoretically. You will be encouraged to consider the needs of your audience and to use this knowledge to create performance material which is challenging, creative and inspiring to others.

You will have a balance of practical and theory lessons and use your knowledge and skills to complement each other as you deepen your understanding of contemporary theatre practice.

Entry requirements

At least two Bs and three Cs at GCSE, including at least a grade 4 in GCSE English Language.

Assessment

Exam: 40%

Non-exam Assessment: 60%

Future opportunities

Many of our students go onto study Drama at university, either on its own or in combination with another subject such as English, Creative Writing or Media. Of course, many students go onto study a diverse range of other subjects and former students have graduated with degrees as diverse as Marine Biology, Medicine, Media Performance and Computer Game Design.

Our Drama students go onto have highly successful careers as performers, journalists, teachers, charity workers and academics – we believe that choosing Drama A-Level will contribute to your success in whichever career you wish to pursue.
