Wood Occupations Advanced Apprenticeship (Site Carpentry/Bench Joinery) - Diploma Level 3 at Redcar & Cleveland College

Course description

To gain the qualifications listed below, you will need to be in a placement which involves working in a wood occupations environment and assisting a tradesman/woman in practical activities, performing some tasks without direct supervision, in order to gain the relevant occupational and industry skills required, and complete Functional Skills during the course unless exempt.

You will collect evidence from work and produce a portfolio to prove you have the skills.

Technical Certificate

A Diploma Award at Level 3 must be completed as part of the Wood Occupations Framework. This is a theory based qualification with an end exam. There is also a requirement to complete a synoptic practical task in the college workshops under work simulated conditions.

Course content

The current Wood Occupations Framework is:

NVQ Level 3:

There are two types of NVQ, depending on the work you do with your employer.

The following units are mandatory if following the ‘Site’ option:

  • Conform to general workplace safety.
  • Confirm work activities and resources for the work.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships.
  • Confirm the occupational method of work.
  • Install first fixing components.
  • Install second fixing components.

The following are optional unitsif following the ‘Site’ option:

  • Erect structural carcassing components.
  • Erect complex structural carcassing components.
  • Maintain non-structural and structural components.
  • Set up and use fixed or transportable machinery.

The following are mandatory if following the ‘Bench Work’ option:

  • Conform to general workplace safety.
  • Confirm work activities and resources for the work.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships.
  • Confirm the occupational method of work.
  • Produce setting out details for routine products.
  • Mark out from setting out details for routine products.
  • Manufacture routine products.
  • Manufacture complex shaped products.

The following are optional unitsif following the ‘Bench’ option:

  • Set up and use fixed or transportable machinery.
  • Produce complex shaped products.

Entry requirements

To commence the Wood Occupations Framework you must already have NVQ Level 2 and/or extensive experience.
