English Literature AS level at The Campion School
Year 12: AS Units (1 Year AS Level or Part One A Level) Unit 1 (LITB1): Aspects of Narrative An introduction to the central position of narrative in the way that texts work. The term narrative is taken in its broadest sense to mean how writers construct texts. Section A – Prose F. Scott Fitzgerald The Great Gatsby Ian McEwan Enduring Love (Post-1990 text) Section B – Poetry 1800-1945 Alfred Tennyson/ Robert Browning Selection This unit is assessed by an open book examination of two hours’ duration. Unit 2 (LITB2): Dramatic Genres An introduction to the dramatic genre of tragedy. Two plays are studied – one by Shakespeare and another by a modern playwright. Shakespeare Hamlet Arthur Miller Death of A Salesman. This unit will be assessed by a coursework portfolio of two pieces of work, each consisting of 1200-1500 words, each exploring an aspect of tragedy.
Students would generally be expected to have gained at least B Grades in GCSE English and GCSE English Literature.
Careers in Law, Journalism, the Media and Education are possibilities but the study of English provides a valuable general background for many areas. One of the advantages of choosing English is that the subject is so highly regarded by admissions tutors and employers. It is a popular subject at University - not least because it is intrinsically enjoyable and (for those who have the skill and enthusiasm) not too difficult!
