Physical Education A Level at Monks' Dyke Tennyson College
Physical education develops students’ competence and confidence to take part in a range of physical activities that become a central part of their lives, both in and out of school. A high-quality physical education curriculum enables all students to enjoy and succeed in many kinds of physical activity. They develop a wide range of skills and the ability to use tactics, strategies and compositional ideas to perform successfully.
This course extends the work covered in the BTEC level 2 or GCSE courses. It is split into four units, with a written paper and coursework modules each year. Students look at the opportunities for and the effects of leading a healthy and active lifestyle. They will also analysis and evaluation of physical activity and/or in an adapted role. They will also examine optimising and evaluating contemporary issues within sport and practical performance in a competitive situation.
Students entering the Form who have not attained grade C or above in GCSE English or Mathematics will be required to re-take those subjects in Year 12 to acquire the C or above result.
An A level in PE is seen as an important qualification when applying to Higher Education to study many subjects such as sports management, Physiotherapy and sports/leisure management. It is also a desirable qualification for many career routes such as teaching, sports development and leisure industry
