Health and Social Care BTEC at South Holderness Technology College

Course description

This BTEC course enables you to link theory with practice in a variety of ways. The design of the course enables the student to apply their learning to a range of work related contexts.

Staff delivering the course have a wide range of experience in the delivery of Health and Social Care. We can boast a number of work placement opportunities that allow the student the opportunity of developing professional practice very early on.

The college has a history of working with a local university and other education and health providers, offering an excellent programme for those who are interested in a career in this sector.

Course content

The BTEC Health and Social Care enables students to develop broad understanding of health and social care principles as well as the opportunity to learn about specific client groups (i.e. caring of the elderly and children). Units are designed to develop practical, personal and interpersonal skills and focus on fundamental caring skills and techniques as well as practical issues within the health care sector. At the end of the course the students will have a BTEC Subsidiary Diploma which is equivalent to one A level. There will be learning opportunities for debates, visiting speakers, individual and group research, visits, role-plays and presentations. Work experience will be carried out in hospitals, schools, residential homes and day care centres. Professional practice is a compulsory component of the course.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs A-C grade including Maths and English

A grade B in GCSE subjects is required for most A Level programmes. Please speak to the sixth form subject teacher for specific details on course entry.

You must have the ability to plan study time in order to complete coursework satisfactorily, a willingness to work independently and a keen interest in the health, social care and early years sector.

Assessment

100% coursework.

Future opportunities

Students go into a variety of career areas related to health and social care e.g. nursing, social work, education. It is an ideal qualification for students who want a broad background in health and social care which will allow students to progress to Higher Education and employment.
