French A Level at Havant Sixth form College

Course description

Being able to speak, read and understand a foreign language is a tremendous asset. You can study French at A Level. Whichever you choose, you’ll enjoy a combination of practical listening and speaking work in our language lab, weekly appointments with your teacher, who is a native speaker, and classroom lessons about the countries of the target language, people and culture. It’s recognised for all university modern languages courses and is an ideal platform for a career in interpreting and translating international business, marketing, law and the travel industry

Course content

Over the two years, you’ll continually develop your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in the target language. In your Second Year, for the examination, you will be tested on comprehension, speaking and writing skills; you will also produce two pieces of written work under exam conditions, as well as two assessed translations. Don’t worry though, we will practise a lot!

Entry requirements

You will require five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English Language and Mathematics with French at grade 6 or above.

Assessment

All units are assessed by exams.

Future opportunities

You’ll have opportunities to take part in subject conferences and translation workshops at the University of Portsmouth. We show foreign language films once a week during the lunchbreak and go to see plays and other performances. You may also choose to undertake work experience abroad. We offer a variety of visits, including Paris.

Language students who wish to continue studying language have progressed on to a range of degrees including French, French & linguistics, French & Italian, French & European studies, Spanish and Italian, Spanish & French, Hispanic/Latin American studies, applied languages, international marketing & languages and interpreting & translating. A good knowledge of a language is a useful asset in any career and may just help you to secure an exciting employment opportunity in the future.
