GCSE Science at Wilnecote High School
All students will study science in Key Stage 4. At Wilnecote we offer a variety of science courses and routes through years 10 and 11. There are a number of pathways available to students dependent upon a variety of factors including interest in the subject, motivation and attainment. Pathway 1 - Students will complete Core and Additional Science over two years, achieving 2 GCSEs in the process. Pathway 2 - Students may choose to study Triple Science. This route is intended for students who have a passion and a flair for Science. It will lead to the award of 3 separate GCSEs in Science - Biology, Chemistry and Physics (see page 36 for more detail). Pathway 3 - The BTEC level 2 course in applied science consists of a number of compulsory and optional modules. Principles of Science 1. Chemistry and Our Earth, 2. Energy and Our Universe, 3. Biology and Our Environment. GCSE Science GCSE science at Wilnecote will inspire, motivate, challenge and develop students’ curiosity about the physical and biological world around us. All our GCSE courses are also designed to provide an insight into Science and experience of how science works. They should enable learners to engage with science in their everyday lives and to make informed choices about further study and about career choices. Content and assessment: The GCSE courses are terminally assessed. The assessment route through biology is shown overleaf but the route through GCSE chemistry or physics is very similar. Unit 1: Biology 1 * Written paper – 1 hour * 60 marks – 25% * Exam taken in June/May Unit 2 : Biology 2 * Written paper – 1 hour * 60 marks – 25% * Exam taken in June. Unit 3: Biology 3 * Written paper – 1 hour *60 marks – 25% Unit 4 : Controlled Assessment – ISA * Investigative Skills Assignment – 2 written assessments plus one or two lessons for practical work and data processing * 50 marks – 25%
You could take this course, which is equivalent to two GCSE's, to prepare for advanced level courses such as an A/AS Level in Science and specialise in one area of science or you may need to strengthen your grades by completing a foundation or intermediate vocational qualification. With further training, you could go into a job related to science such as a Teacher, Pharmacist or Science Technician . You could also go straight into employment and do further training or part time study with the support of your employer.
