Course description

WHY CHOOSE LATIN?

The course examines some of the literature, concepts and beliefs of Roman civilisation which both in its own right and in its transmission of Greek culture has provided much of the framework for our ways of viewing the world.

Course content

CONTENT - Advanced Subsidiary Level

Accidence and syntax in accordance with subject specification.

Verse set text - Ovid - Metamorphoses III

Prose set text - Cicero: De Imperio

Unseen translation

Vocabulary in accordance with the prescribed Word List

Entry requirements

AS Level

  • Entry onto AS courses is conditional on you achieving at least five B grades at GCSE Level which must include the subjects you intend to study
  • If you are starting a new subject at AS Level such as Psychology or Film Studies you must achieve a B grade in a related subject at GCSE Level such as Science or English
  • All students must also achieve at least a C grade in Mathematics and English Language

ASSESSMENT

Examination at end of Year 12 2 x 1 hour units

Unit F361 : Unseen Latin Prose, tested by translation

Unit F362 : Latin Verse and Prose Literature

WHAT CAN I DO WITH LATIN?

Latin is a well respected A Level subject and qualification which has traditionally combined well with a wide range of Arts subjects and is increasingly valued in combination with Science subjects, providing contrast and balance to an A level course.

A good grade GCSE is needed to start the course together with an interest in language, literature and the culture of a key civilisation which contributed largely to our own.
