Food Nutrition and Health A Level *FEES PAYABLE* at Northampton High School

Course description

This course allows students to develop an understanding of issues relating to society and health, resource management, nutrition and food production. The emphasis of the course is on the practical aspects of home economics and students develop an understanding of human need and consumer rights, along with nutrition and food production. It requires students to develop complex food preparation skills and will provide the opportunity to work with a range of food products.

Course content

AS Level
Unit 1 Demography / family / society / environmental issues/ Society and Health.

Unit 2 Food preparation and cooking equipment / food contamination and hygiene/Resource Management.

A2 Level

Unit 3 Properties of food / nutrition / dietary needs / Nutrition and food production.

Unit 4 Single, substantial study of candidate’s choice.

Entry requirements

This course further develops students’ knowledge and understanding from either GCSE Home Economics or Food Technology but is also suitable for students who have previous experience or interests in Food, Nutrition and Health but not necessarily a GCSE qualification.


Examination: 75%
Coursework: 25%
