Childcare Apprenticeship at Furness College

Course description

Apprenticeships in Early Years are for anyone who wants to work with children from birth to 7 years old, to care for them and help their learning and development.

Course content

Apprentice – Level 2
Units studied include: Introduction to communication in health, social care and childcare settings, introduction to personal development, introduction to equality and inclusion, child and young person development, safeguard the wellbeing of children and young people, maintain and support relationships, support positive behaviour, contribute to the supporting child and young person development, contribute to health and safety, support positive environments and understand partnership working.

Advanced Apprentice – Level 3
Units studied include: Health and wellbeing, legislation, frameworks and professional practice, play, development and learning for school readiness and professional development. The themes are split into 23 units, including longitudinal studies of child development.

Entry requirements

These are dependent on the sector and the criteria of some employers, but they are normally:

Apprentice Level 2: A minimum of four GCSEs at grades A* – E including English Language and mathematics.

Advanced Apprentice Level 3: An Apprenticeship at Level 2 or other equivalent Early Years qualification or experience and GCSE English Language and mathematics grades A*- C.

Higher Level Apprenticeship Level 4: These are available in some subject areas; but in all instances you will need to be already qualified to Level 3.

Assessment

The apprenticeship is assessed on practical aptitude, a portfolio of work and examination in ICT, English and maths.

Future opportunities

Once the apprenticeship has finished there is the opportunity to keep on working with your Level 3 qualification, maybe get promoted or go on to higher education. Here at Furness College you can continue your studies by applying for the Foundation Degree in Children, Young People and Their Services.
