AS / A Level - Chemistry at Blackpool Sixth Form College

Course description

A Level Chemistry is all around us, from the soap we use in the shower to the pharmaceutical drugs we use to cure our ailments, from the fuel we use in our vehicles to the paint we use in our houses. By studying chemistry, you can learn laboratory skills in modern well-equipped facilities.  You will also find out how the theory learnt in class can be used and applied to everyday situations.

Course content


AS Chemistry Year includes:

  • Atoms, bonds and groups
  • Chains, energy and resources
  • Practical skills in chemistry

A2 Chemistry Year includes:

  • Rings, polymers and analysis
  • Equilibria, energetics and elements
  • Practical skills in chemistry

Entry requirements


For the AS course you should have either Double Award Science* at higher tier (grade B or above) or GCSE Chemistry (grade B or above) and GCSE Biology or Physics (Grade B or above). You should also achieve a grade B or above in GCSE Maths (higher tier).

*This must be Core and Additional Science. Students who have taken Core and Applied Science will not be qualified to take this course and should consider one of the BTEC Applied Science courses instead.
