History AS/A Level at St Thomas More Catholic School

Course description

History at A level is a highly respected academic subject. Not only will you learn about the past, you will develop a wide range of skills that have always been attractive to employers.

Course content

Unit 1H Tsarist and Communist Russia, 1855–1964

This option allows students to study in breadth issues of change, continuity, cause and consequence in this period through the following key questions:

  • How was Russia governed and how did political authority change and develop?
  • Why did opposition develop and how effective was it?
  • How and with what results did the economy develop and change?
  • What was the extent of social and cultural change?
  • How important were ideas and ideology?
  • How important was the role of individuals and groups and how were they affected by developments?

Unit 2S The Making of Modern Britain, 1951–2007

This option provides for the study in depth of the key political, economic, social and international changes which helped to mould Britain in the second half of the 20th century. It explores concepts such as government and opposition, class, social division and cultural change. It encourages students to reflect on Britain’s changing place in the world as well as the interrelationship between political policies,economic developments and political survival.

Unit 3: Personal Study

In Year 13 students will complete a personal study based on a topic of student’s choice. This should take the form of a question in the context of approximately 100 years. It must not duplicate the content of options chosen for Components 1 and 2.

Entry requirements

You will need a minimum Grade C at GCSE though in certain circumstances students with equivalent grades in other subjects may be considered.

Assessment

At the end of Year 12 students will complete AS examinations for Unit 1 and Unit 2:

Unit 1H Tsarist and Communist Russia, 1855–1964

  • Written exam: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Two questions (one compulsory)
  • 50 marks
  • 50% of AS Unit

2S The Making of Modern Britain, 1951–2007

  • Written exam: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Two questions (one compulsory)
  • 50 marks
  • 50% of AS

At the end of Year 13 students will complete A level examinations for Unit 1 and Unit 2:

Unit 1H Tsarist and Communist Russia, 1855–1964

  • Written exam: 2 hours 30 minutes
  • Three questions (one compulsory)
  • 80 marks
  • 40% of A level

Unit 2S The Making of Modern Britain, 1951–2007

  • Written exam: 2 hours 30 minutes
  • Three questions (one compulsory)
  • 80 marks
  • 40% of A level
