Drama A - AS Level at Shooters Hill Sixth Form College

Course description

This course is ideal for you if you are curious about issues and ideas and have a creative instinct for communicating your views about Drama. You should also be keen on acting or directing and wish to develop your skills in these areas. Equally you will be interested in going to the theatre to see plays performed as this is an integral part of the course. The AS and A Level can lead to further study in Drama, Theatre Studies and Performing Arts in higher education at degree or HND Level. It can be used to broaden your studies and may lead on to a career in the performing arts industries. Drama and Theatre Studies compliments a range of subjects such as Law, Media and English.

Course content

The whole A Level consists of 4 units.

AS Units:
Unit 1: Live Theatre Production Seen and Prescribed Play
This will entail a written exam of 1 hour 30 minutes;
Unit 1 - Section A - response to live theatre seen during the course; Section B - study of one set play

(Students MUST attend 2 live theatre performances)

Unit 2: Presentation of an Extract from a Play
This will entail the performance of an extract from a published play. Assessment will be based on the student's acting skills and the preparatory/development work, including supporting notes. Students will study an influential theatrical practitioner who will influence their practical piece.

A Level Units:

Unit 3: Further Prescribed Plays including Pre-Twentieth Century
This will entail a written exam of 2 hours. Students will study two plays: Section A - one pre-20th century play; Section B - one 20th century/contemporary play

Unit 4: Presentation of Devised Drama
Students will perform a piece of original Drama. Assessment will be based on the student's acting skills and the preparatory/development work, including supporting notes. Students will also research a theatrical style that will influence their practical piece.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at Grades A - C. You should have a minimum of Grade C in GCSE English Language. Drama at GCSE would be useful but not essential.
