Course description

The Diploma Programme global politics course engages students with key political concepts and contemporary political issues in a variety of contexts and through a variety of approaches. Through teaching and learning in the subject, students develop a holistic and nuanced understanding of global politics and acquire the skills needed to analyse, evaluate and act on political issues they encounter inside and outside of the classroom.

Course content

Core units: people, power and politics

Four compulsory units:

·         Unit 1: Power, sovereignty and international relations

·         Unit 2: Human rights

·         Unit 3: Development

·         Unit 4: Peace and conflict

 

Coursework:

A political issue of personal interest, complemented with research.

 

Global Political Challenges

Political issues in two of the following six global political challenges researched and presented through a case-study approach:

·         Environment                           •   Poverty

·         Health                                      •   Identity

·         Borders                                   •   Security

Entry requirements

  • 5+ A*-C (9-4) grades in GCSE
  • grade in a Humanities -related subject and Grade 6 in English

Assessment

Coursework:

A political issue of personal interest, complemented with research. Coursework assess the ability to research, write and present information and is equal to 20% of the overall grade. 

Examinations:

In the examinations there is an emphasis on written skills, testing your ability to form an argument and interpret information and is equal to 80% of the overall grade.
