Course description

This course is perfect if you enjoy all things science-related and have a particular interest in problem solving and investigation.

Assisting in a criminal enquiry or piecing together the jigsaw of a complex crime scene, is a challenging profession, but at the same time, hugely rewarding knowing that your skills and knowledge could help to solve the puzzle in an important investigation.

If this is the career for you, then this course is the stepping stone you’ll need to progress to university-level study.

Covering a variety of topics including forensic psychology and scientific practical techniques, you will gain both a theoretical and a practical feel for this intriguing and progressive field of study.

ncn has excellent links with Nottingham’s BioCity so you will have the chance to speak with employers and get a fantastic insight into career opportunities.

On completion of the course you could progress to the Level 3 Applied Science course or on to a degree in forensic science, criminology or psychology. Career path options include jobs such as a forensic investigator, laboratory scientist or crime scene officer.

Course content

As well as covering the fundamentals of science, you will also learn about scientific investigations, scientific practical techniques, criminal law and examination, and forensic psychology.
With a combination of both theory-based and practical units, you will get a real feel for the role of a forensic scientist.

As well as classroom-based lessons with experienced tutors and state-of-the-art facilities, you will also receive plenty of opportunity to gain practical experience outside of the College during mock crime scene investigations, where you will use the skills you have obtained to solve a fictional crime.

The course will also teach you a number of other important skills such as researching and evaluating data and information and how to effectively interpret, present and report your findings.
You will study in our modern laboratories at ncn Basford Hall, with friendly, knowledgeable and experienced tutors to support you and to help you reach your full potential.
