Applied Science BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate at The Dukeries Academy

Course description

This is a 2 year course that consists of 4 modules, which 3 are mandatory.

Designed for learners who are interested in learning about the sector alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses, not necessarily in applied science. To be taken as part of a programme of study that includes other appropriate BTEC Nationals or A Levels.

  • Principles and Applications of Science I
  • Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
  • Science Investigation Skills
  • Physiology of human body systems

Entry requirements

2 C’s grade in Science Core or Additional.


42% of the course is assessed internally by case studies, assignments, projects and performance observations. 58% will be assessed externally by examination or set tasks. The qualification will have an overall grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction calculated on the total points achieved from internal and external assessment.

Future opportunities

Learners who have completed this qualification in a year may progress to further learning at Level 3. The requirements of the qualification will mean that learners develop the transferable and higher order skills which are valued by higher education providers and employers. The qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as contributing to meeting admission requirements for many relevant courses.
