Chemistry AS/A-Level at Highams Park School

Course description

Students will follow the highly acclaimed SALTERS’ Chemistry AS/A2 Level course. This course was developed in recent years to meet the demands of rapidly changing approaches to the teaching of chemistry and to its applications in industry and society. Students are taught through the "chemical storyline" which contains a series of topics through which the underlying chemical ideas form the essential content. Activities enable the students to learn via problem-solving activities, practical work, research, ict etc.

Entry requirements

The ability to plan and research for extended project work, obtain evidence and evaluate their work will be essential. There are many opportunities for students to show their practical skills in a wide variety of techniques such as making up solutions, test tube reactions, titrations, researching, ICT presentations, group work and individual practical assessments. The course requires students to be independent in their approach to learning, in order that they may confirm what they have learned and may also understand and apply new ideas. Good grades in GCSE chemistry or science are needed.

Future opportunities

Chemistry at A level allows students to gain entry to degree courses in Chemistry, Medicine, Pharmacy, Forensic Sciences, Environmental Sciences to name just a few. Other science degree courses will benefit from a background in A level Chemistry, whilst some people go straight into employment from 6th form. You could take this course with other advanced level courses, which overlap with Chemistry such as Biology, Applied Science, Physics, Geography, Geology or more general subjects that may not relate to the sciences, to prepare for higher education. With further training, you could go into a job related to Chemistry or one of the other sciences such as a Doctor, Nurse, Scientist or Pharmacist. The course will also help you to develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
