Course description

This certificate provides the underpinning knowledge in electro-technology and safety needed for anyone planning to take up a career in this industry. It is ideally suited to school leavers who wish to become electricians working in the maintenance or installation trades.

Course content

This certificate provides the underpinning knowledge in electro-technology and safety needed for anyone planning to take up a career in this industry. It is ideally suited to school leavers who wish to become electricians working in the maintenance or installation trades. This certificate combines three core units which develop the generic electro-technical knowledge such as health and safety and electrical science, with an optional unit in Electrical Installation (Buildings and Structures) needed to complete the full award.

These core units include the following topics:

  • Working effectively and safely
  • Applications of Health and Safety
  • Electrical principles
  • Principles of electro-technology.

Practical tasks are used to combine this electro-technical knowledge with electrical installation practices within a workshop environment.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at grades A*-C, including Science, English and Maths. Subjects such as ICT and D&T are also preferred.

To study on this course you will need:

  • Paper and pens
  • An A4 folder with dividers
  • A scientific calculator with an engineering button (e.g. Casio fx83MS)
  • Drawing instruments (pencils, ruler, set squares and compass)
  • Protective footwear and overalls for workshop sessions

 

Future opportunities

Progression to a Level 3 certificate or employment within an apprenticeship framework.

It is on major bus routes and is less than a 15 minute walk from the mainline railway station in Crewe.
