Foundations: Food Industry Skills (Catering) Level 1 Certificate at Accrington and Rossendale College

Course description

The Level 1 Certificate in Food Industry Skills – Catering (VRQ) is suitable for learners who are not already working in the food industry, but who would like to develop either basic or intermediate skills and knowledge to enable them to progress into further learning or into apprenticeships. This qualification can be applied in a range of different industry contexts including bakery, dairy, meat and fish processing along with relevant industry knowledge such as the importance of food safety and quality.

Course content

Course content: This is a one year full time course which involves 3 days of study a week. This will give you the opportunity to improve confidence, take part in lots of practical activities, days out and give you taste of lots of different pathways available to study within the college on completion of the course.

Maths and English: Alongside this programme you will complete Functional Skills maths and English. These lessons will give you the key skills to progress effectively in everyday life and employment.

Work related learning: The work related learning programme focuses on the high expectations of employers, encouraging and supporting learners to develop the skills required to progress into other vocational areas and employment. This includes subject areas such as equality and diversity, healthy living, money management and enterprise activities.

Tutorial: Tutorial is a workshop designed to develop your employability skills and produce a portfolio of evidence including a CV, personal statement, and general evidence of good practice within your academic studies.

Entry requirements

The Foundations Level 1 Certificate in Catering programme is aimed at students aged 16 – 19 years who are possibly achieving at Entry Level 3 and are currently interested a career in the hospitality and catering industry. You must have English and Maths at Entry Level 3, and you will be expected to attend a College interview.

Assessment

The vocational qualification will be assessed throughout the year through written, practical and oral assignments. Maths and English are assessed through a final exam.

Future opportunities

Successful completion of the Level 1 Certificate in Food Industry Skills – Catering (VRQ) Programme can lead to a place on a whole range of the Colleges Level 1 or Level 2 programmes.
