AS COURSE

Unit 1: Investigating Media
2hr exam 50% of AS, 25% of A2
Students will study a range of media texts (moving image, digital/web based or print) and answer four compulsory short answers based on one unseen stimulus material. They will also study two cross-media case studies e.g. documentary, lifestyle and answer one essay question.

Unit 2: Creating Media
Coursework 50% of AS, 25% of A2
Students will produce two linked media artefacts e.g. a film trailer and two magazine articles or a website to promote the film. They will also evaluate their own work.

A2 COURSE

Unit 3: Media – Critical Perspectives
Exam 25% of A Level
Students will study two pre-set topic areas such as representation in the media and the impact of new/ digital media. They will also answer three compulsory questions on two unseen stimulus pieces.

Unit 4: Media – Research and Production
Coursework 25% of A Level
Students will investigate a media theme/text in more depth and produce an essay and a production piece reflecting this research e.g. an essay focusing on ideologies surrounding gender in soap opera and produce the opening sequence to a new soap opera.

Entry requirements

The course would be suitable for students who have gained a grade C or above in GCSE Media Studies. For students who did not study Media Studies at GCSE grade B or above at GCSE English Language is required.

Future opportunities

Most important is that the students are actually interested in the Media and its place in the world today. They need to be prepared to study all aspects of the media from advertisements and TV shows to websites and newspapers. They must be prepared to share their views and work independently. The course would be useful for those students wishing to work within the media e.g. in advertising and journalism.
